National Silat Exponents Ready For Manila Games
By Farhanah Azmi on 05/31/2008 at 10:01am (UTC)
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 (Bernama) -- Even though most exponents in the silat dance squad are placed under Category B by the Olympics Council of Malaysia (OCM), they remain spirited and are ready for the 23rd SEA Games in Manila next month.

Eight exponents representing Malaysia for the event are Habizan Othman-Randai Minang (men's solo); Suzy Mohd Sulaiman (women's solo); Hafiz Abu Hasan, Mohd Fauze Latip and Marzuki Mokhtar (men's team); and Siti Nur Ayisah Zainal Abidin, Norhidayah Yusof and Rina Juliana Adnan (women's team).

Among them, only Suzy is placed under Category A after she won a gold medal in the World Silat Championship in Singapore last year.

"So far, the athletes are 80 per cent ready mentally and physically and we believe that they can give a good performance and a good challenge against their opponents in the SEA Games," trainer Nasri Nasir told Bernama.

Besides Nasri, the coach for solo events, the athletes also receive guidance from Othman Jupri for the team event.

Nasri said the National Silat Association of Malaysia (Pesaka) would take the exponents for a five-day friendly match in Bangkok next Tuesday to test their skills ahead of the SEA Games.

"This is the first competition overseas for the exponents this year. It will help them prepare for the SEA Games," he said.

"According to the plan, after the friendly match in Bangkok, Pesaka plans to hold the same in the Philippines but it has not been confirmed yet," he said.

In the Manila SEA Games, four gold medals are up for grabs in the silat dance event with two each in solo and team events.

"Even though Pesaka has targeted one gold for women's solo, we in the squad are eyeing two golds; Insya Allah," Nasri said.

"In terms of training, our exponents are strong but the challenge from the host can spring a surprise like in Vietnam two years ago.

"This event is a subjective sport. Anything can happen," Nasri said.

In silat, Malaysian exponents obtained a gold through men's sparring in the 22nd SEA Games in Vietnam in 2003 and women's sparring in the previous games in Kuala Lumpur.

Sparring events will not be held in Manila.

Martial Arts : Kuala Lumpur honours its athletes
By NG WEI LOON ~TheStarOnline on 05/31/2008 at 9:59am (UTC)
MARTIAL artists Vasantha Marial Anthony, karate-do, and Liew Yew Fai, wushu, fought their way to the top of the Kuala Lumpur Sportswoman and Sportsman awards at Berjaya Times Square Hotel last Friday.

Vasantha and Liew were the big winners on the night.
Liew, 22, edged nine other nominees - Mohd Shakirin Ibrahim (table tennis), Hoon Thien How (badminton), Shahir Sulaiman (swimming), R. Puvaneswaran (karate-do), Mohd Shahrrulhaizy Abd Rahman (athletics), Suhardi Hassan (cycling), Azlisham Zakaria (body building), Muhammad Amin Rahim (hockey) and Habizan Othman (RANDAI MINANG) - for the Sportsman award with his sterling effort at the World Wushu Championships in Vietnam last year where he clinched the jianshu title.

“My aim is to defend my title at the next world championships in Beijing next year,” said Liew, who took up wushu at the age of 12.

Meanwhile, Vasantha fended off challenges from five other contenders - Lydia Cheah Li-Ya (badminton), Ngew Sin Mei (athletics), A. Kannagi (hockey), Hanida Zaili Jailani (silat) and Teo Woon Yen (basketball) - for the Sportswoman award.

Vasantha, 29, is looking forward to her first appearance in the women’s minus 45kg category at the upcoming Asian Games in Doha.

The duo, who received their awards from Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Ruslin Hasan, also walked away RM5,000 each.

Ruslin urged the city’s athletes to work harder to earn national representation at the international level and win honours for the country.

“Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) does not only focus on encouraging mass participation in physical pursuits. We also emphasise high performance sports by providing facilities and support to Kuala Lumpur Sports Council (MSKL) and its affiliates to work towards sports excellence.

“The incentives given to our athletes symbolise our appreciation and we hope to motivate them to scale greater heights in the future,” added Ruslin.

Although national walker Shahrrulhaizy and karate-do exponent Puvaneswaran failed in their bid for the Sportsman award, they received consolation rewards for their gold medal performances at last year’s SEA Games in Manila.

Joining them were national women’s long and triple jumper Sin Mei and women’s walking ace Yuan Yufang, who also struck gold medals at SEA Games.

The quartet were rewarded with RM3,000 each for their efforts.

Junior swimmer G. Vaageesan won the Most Promising Sportsman Award through his SEA age-group meet achievements in Brunei last year.

The Form Four Methodist Boys School student won a gold medal in the 200m butterfly and a bronze medal in the 100m butterfly for the boys’ Under-15 category at the meet.

“Winning the award is my best achievement so far. I am looking forward to do well at the National Junior and SEA age-group meets next year,” said Vaagesan, 16.

Another win for karate-do came through SMK (P) Jalan Ipoh student Jamiliah Jamaludin in the Most Promising Sportswoman category.

“The SEA Games in Manila last year was a memorable outing as I managed to collect two silver medals in the women’s 60kg and women’s team event,” said Jamiliah, 21.

Jamiliah, who also won a bronze medal at Asian Karate Championships last year, credited her coaches - P. Arivalagan and C. Muralitharan - for her success.

“The award came as a surprise because I am still new to the scene, having taken up the art only five years ago,” said Jamiliah.

Meanwhile, junior girls’ cager Nur Izzati Yaakob was the winner of the Special Award.

Gymnastics won the biggest purse for the association’s accomplishments in the Women’s Games last season.

The artistic and rhythmic gymnasts who contributed medals shared a total of RM6,300 while the state association received RM4,800.

Disabled athletes who did well at the third Asean ParaGames in Manila and the National Paralympic Games were also rewarded.

“It was great that 38 of the city’s sports associations affiliated to MSKL turned up in full force for the gathering,” said DBKL Sports Board member Datuk Seri Mohd Noor Abdul Rahim.

13 Pingat Emas Lagi Untuk Menepati Sasaran
Daripada Jaiarajo Letchumanan on 05/31/2008 at 9:44am (UTC)
